How To Prepare For A Virtual Interview
In recent years we’ve all become very accustomed to video calls and engaging with friends, family and colleagues over various video-based platforms. However, when it comes to preparing for a virtual interview, whether it's conducted on Teams, Zoom, or any other platform, you should ensure that you’ve prepared a little more than you may do for a normal call with a colleague. Here’s a reminder of the preparation you should consider:
Test Your Technology: Ensure that you have the necessary software and a stable internet connection. Test your audio, video, and screen-sharing capabilities in advance to avoid any technical issues during the interview. Familiarise yourself with the platform's features, such as muting and unmuting, virtual backgrounds, and chat functions.
Choose a Suitable Location: Find a quiet, well-lit space where you won't be disturbed during the interview. Remove any potential distractions from the background and consider using a neutral or professional virtual background if available. Ensure that the space is tidy and professional in appearance.
“Dress Code”: This is a more complex area in recent years as “dress codes”, if such a thing remains, are more blurred that they might have been a few years ago. Prior to the interview it it would be worthwhile checking if the organisation has a specific dress code that you would be expected to adhere to should you be offered and accept a role with them. If not then dress in a manner that makes you feel most confident and is appropriate for an interview setting.
Prepare Your Environment: Make sure you have a clutter-free and organised workspace. Have a copy of your CV, notes on the company, and any prepared questions within reach for reference. Keep a glass of water nearby in case you need it during the interview.
Research the Company: Thoroughly research the company, its mission, values, culture, recent news, and any other relevant information. This knowledge will help you align your responses and showcase your interest in the company during the interview.
Practice with Mock Interviews: Conduct mock interviews with a friend or family member using the video platform you'll be using for the actual interview. Practice answering common interview questions, maintaining eye contact with the camera, and projecting confidence and professionalism through the screen.
Prepare Answers and Examples: Anticipate common interview questions and prepare concise, well-thought-out answers. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses and provide specific examples of your accomplishments and experiences.
Prepare Questions to Ask: Prepare a list of thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. This demonstrates your interest in the role and the company. Ask about the company's culture, future plans, team dynamics, or any other areas you would like more information about.
Practice Body Language and Eye Contact: Maintain good posture, smile, and use confident body language during the interview. Look directly into the camera to simulate eye contact and engage with the interviewer. Avoid distractions and stay focused on the conversation.
Time Management: Be mindful of the interview's scheduled time and be punctual. Log into the meeting a few minutes early to ensure everything is working properly. Avoid scheduling conflicts and inform others in your household to minimise interruptions.
Follow-Up and Thank You: After the interview, send a timely thank-you email or message expressing your appreciation for the opportunity to interview. Reiterate your interest in the position and highlight any key points discussed during the interview.
Remember that preparation is key to a successful virtual interview. By taking the time to practice, familiarise yourself with the technology, and present yourself professionally, you increase your chances of making a positive impression and securing the opportunity you desire.
